Saving for a house can be challenging for many young people, particularly recent graduates with education debts. Hence, this app helps young people to save money and select their ideal home from the onset of their buying consideration.

Context

The differences between the 90s generation and older generations have become clearer. This generation tends to pursue higher education at a greater rate, often resulting in higher income. However, they tend to purchase a house later than the older generation did.

Research Findings

Based on 5 user interviews and 21 survey responses, it was discovered that 70% of young adults strongly aspire to own a house in the future. To them, homeownership symbolises stability. Their work experience, obtained during their university years, is making it easier for them to find a job and secure a stable income.

However, the majority of young adults still find it difficult to save money for purchasing a house due to two main reasons:

lack a clear plan for when and where to purchase a house

struggle to stick to their savings plans because they often overspend on day-to-day expenses

Design Challenge

How can we help millennials plan and achieve their savings goals, so they can own a house sooner?

Paper Prototype

After brainstorming some initial ideas, I created quick sketches for prototype testing. During testing, I discovered that users found it engaging and fun to achieve their money-saving goals with my idea. However, some confusing components need to be redefined.

User Flow

How does Save For You work?

Design System

Solution App

The app I've created stands out for its comprehensive support, guiding users from home buying contemplation to the final decision.

Homepage

A model house in a jar rises as money accumulates, symbolising its realisation and motivating users once it "pops out".

Tracking

Providing users with multiple methods, such as diagrams and progress bars, to track their progress makes everything more clear and effective.

Support During the Process

The app will guide users throughout their savings journey. For example, providing tailored tips if a savings plan is suspended.

Housing Recommendations

Towards the end of the savings journey, the app advises users to plan their purchases. Users receive multiple push notifications featuring 20 ideal homes from which they can choose.

Lessons Learned

Quick sketches on paper can help save time

Previously, I prefer to make designs directly with software. This time, however, I tried to use a few rounds of paper prototypes first to test my ideas with different people. This approach helped me avoid potential mistakes and better understand my audience's preferences.

Meet directly with the user to gain real understanding

Many people prefer online interviews today, which can also fulfill designers' needs. However, I have found that face-to-face user interactions reveal more in-depth insights than just responses to my questions.
